About Vickers Laboratories UK Chemical Manufacturer

1919 A converted Vimy became the first aircraft to cross the Atlantic Ocean non-stop. The Vimy was later developed into the Virginia, a mainstay in the RAF during the interwar years. Soon after the War, Vickers produced the Valentia and Viking flying boats (in conjunction with S. E. Saunders). 1955 the name of the shipbuilding division changed to Vickers-Armstrongs (Shipbuilders). 1927 The company became Vickers-Armstrongs after a merger with Armstrong Whitworth. The latter’s shipyard at High Walker on the River Tyne became the “Naval Yard”.
In 2003, Rolls-Royce renamed its Vickers subsidiaries Vinters Engineering plc.5 The Vickers name lived on in Alvis Vickers. Industrial applications require industrial-strength hydraulic systems—like those built with Danfoss piston pumps. From closed-circuit to open-circuit systems and fixed displacement vane pumps, our expansive range of industrial pumps provide the performance, durability and flexibility your hydraulic application needs. Vickers by Danfoss pumps, motors, valves, HPUs and cylinders are found in industrial applications worldwide. Vickers entered naval shipbuilding with the purchase of Barrow Shipbuilding Company in 1897, forming the Naval Construction Yard at Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria.

  • These outstanding drivetrain products are widely used across many industries, including mining, marine, paper, metalworking, oil and gas, can manufacturing, laundry, logging, roll form and grinding.
  • Edward’s investments in the railway industry allowed him to gain control of the company, based at Millsands near Sheffield, and known as Naylor Vickers and Company.
  • In 1902 Vickers took a half share in the famous Clyde shipyard John Brown & Company.
  • With these acquisitions, Vickers could now produce a complete selection of products, from ships and marine fittings to armour plate and a whole suite of ordnance.
  • 1911 A controlling interest was acquired in Whitehead and Co, the torpedo manufacturers.

I’ve always really enjoyed helping people, going the extra mile and giving the best customer service I can give, ensuring efficiency and professionalism in everything I do, and always with a smile. Exclusive hydrocushion design reduces pressure shocks from the system. Operate these valves remotely for unloading and sequencing, or directly for pressure relieving and reducing.

  • Vickers Hydraulic Valves are available with or without integral relief valve section and are suitable for pressures up to 3000 psi.
  • 1927 The company became Vickers-Armstrongs after a merger with Armstrong Whitworth.
  • Canadair was founded shortly after by former Canadian Vickers employees and later absorbed into Bombardier Aerospace.
  • His brother, William, owned a steel rolling operation at Millsands.
  • We are delighted to announce that Calibre Scientific has acquired Vickers Laboratories Ltd.

In 1999 Reumech, owner of OMC, the South African defence company was purchased and renamed as Vickers OMC. Perfect for applications such as drilling machinery, top head drives and marine winches, our low-speed high torque motors are engineered with robust components to deliver smooth, consistent power even in the toughest conditions. The Vickers 6-ton tank was the most successful, being exported or built by other nations under licence. The Vickers A1E1 Independent tank design was never put into production but credited with influencing other nations. During the Second World War, Vickers built large guns and tanks; the Valentine tank was a design that they had developed privately.

It also expanded its programme for providing technical information to other companies and expanded this service to include Dominion countries. Was in the process of establishing a centralized research department for the aviation side of the business under Mr Barnes Wallis as well as equipping a centralized research department for the engineering side of the business.38. Vickers was formed in Sheffield as a steel foundry by the miller Edward Vickers and his father-in-law George Naylor in 1828. Naylor was a partner in the foundry Naylor & Sanderson, and Vickers’ brother William owned a steel rolling operation.
With decades of experience, a global network of experts, and a comprehensive line of proven products, we’re committed to solving the toughest power challenges across the spectrum of industrial applications. With innovations spanning from alternative energy and civil engineering to manufacturing and marine, we’re one of the world’s most trusted industrial hydraulic solution partners. Vickers manufactured and sold the Maxim machine gun, forming a partnership with Hiram Maxim, its inventor. They later took over the company and improved the design as the Vickers machine gun, which was the last major design Hiram Maxim himself worked on. It became the standard machine gun of the British Empire and Commonwealth, serving for some 50 years in the British Army.
Vickers produced the machine gun in dozens of cartridge sizes and sold it all over the world. They also scaled it up to larger calibres, particularly for the Royal Navy as the 0.5 inch model. Cooke and Sons, a scientific instrument manufacturing business.

This was owned by Vickers, English Electric and Bristol (holding 40%, 40% and 20% respectively). The Supermarine operation was closed in 1963 and the Vickers name for aircraft was dropped in 1965. Under the terms of the Aircraft and Shipbuilding Industries Act BAC was nationalised in 1977 to become part of British Aerospace, which exists today in the guise of BAE Systems. Calibre Scientific has expanded their global reach to over 175 countries, empowering customers all over the world.

Vickers by Danfoss industrial valves give you their best day in, day out, %KEYWORD_VAR% in both stationary and mobile hydraulic applications. Press, bore, clamp, cut, lift, dig and haul, our high-performance valves can tackle almost any task in the world’s harshest conditions. Further diversification occurred in 1901 with the purchase of Herbert Austin’s embryonic car manufacturing plans, and Austin himself, from The Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine Company. The new business was incorporated and named The Wolseley Tool and Motor Car Company and works were purchased at Adderley Park, Birmingham.

Vickers was the major partner in the new company with two thirds of the shares; Armstrong Whitworth would receive one third of the shares. Vickers Hydraulic Valves are available with or without integral relief valve section and are suitable for pressures up to 3000 psi. Their directional valves offer the ultimate in compactness and versatility of application for many directional control requirements f hydraulic machinery. Ruggedness of design, controlled manufacturing quality and world-wide parts interchangeability are important parts of the overall story. Even on the most exacting industrial applications, you’ll find our directional controls keep your maintenance simple and downtime at a minimum. When your application needs rotary power, they have a hydraulic motor to do the job.
We would like to thank all our customers for their continued support, and we foresee a bright future, confident in the positive impact this collaboration will have on our industry. As we move ahead, we are looking forward to the opportunities this acquisition presents. Together with Calibre Scientific, we are committed to driving innovation and continuing to deliver our excellent service and adaptability.
